About the Job

Overall Responsibilities

This position will also be responsible for overseeing several ongoing externally funded research projects in the Ostrander Lab. The person hired for this role will require in-depth knowledge of cancer biology and will perform biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology experiments using breast cancer cell lines, patient-derived organoids, and mouse mammary models. This position is a short term appointment, expected to end July 2026.

Essential Functions of this position

Design and perform collaborative laboratory research experiments (this includes but is not limited to: 2D and 3D in vitro assays such as cell culture, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, RT-PCR, proximity ligand assays, migration assays, tumorsphere assays). Be able to acquire, analyze, interpret, and organize data and document research experiments and protocols. (50%)

Maintain written and graphical summaries of methods, results, and conclusions. Be able to think critically, design experiments independently, and translate research to material to be used in grant submissions and manuscript preparation. (10%)

Perform general lab management (database management, organization (10%)

Provide and update standard operating procedures for routinely performed assays (5%)

Participate in meetings with lab members and collaborators. Present scientific presentations. (5%)

Maintain lab inventories and laboratory equipment (5%)

Oversee and train new staff (15%)

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree plus at least four years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least eight years.
  • In depth knowledge of cancer biology and cellular signaling.
  • Expertise in the experimental use of oncolytic viruses
  • Expertise in cell culture techniques, in vitro, and in vivo assays to assess cancer biology
  • Be skilled in preparing scientific figures for grants, manuscripts, and oral presentations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (peer-reviewed journals, scientific poster and oral presentations)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Track record of working well in teams and collaborative projects
  • 5+ years experience in research laboratory setting
  • Ability to maintain an independent mindset
  • Experience in cancer stem cells
  • Solid working knowledge of breast cancer biology
  • Experience in training others in scientific technique
  • Experience in maintaining lab operations
  • Experience in manuscript preparation (writing, figure preparation, editing)
  • Ability to critically evaluate the scientific literature
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis for data
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $51,668 - $56,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: Short-term 100% Appointment
